Floor Refinishing Service. Hardwood Floor Sanding & Installation
When Historic Railroad Equipment Manufacturers U.S.A. approached us to restore the flooring of a historic train car, we knew we were about to embark on a unique and challenging project. This wasn’t just any train car; it was a restaurant car intended for the Abraham Lincoln Funeral Car, previously restored by the company. The significance of this car, tied to the legacy of one of America’s greatest presidents, made this project a truly special endeavor.
Historic Railroad Equipment Manufacturers U.S.A. is renowned for its dedication to preserving and celebrating pivotal moments in railroad history. In November 2013, the company brought to life the Wm. H. Simpson 1860s replica steam locomotive alongside its sister engine, the Leviathan. These steam engines reenacted historic events such as the driving of the last golden spike, “The Great Locomotive Chase,” and the restaging of President Lincoln’s stop at Hanover Junction before delivering the Gettysburg Address. Their meticulous restorations serve as a living museum, allowing people to relive significant moments from the past.
Initial Assessment and Planning: Our journey began with a detailed assessment of the train car’s existing floor. The wood, though aged, held immense historical value, and our goal was to enhance its beauty while preserving its integrity. Collaborating closely with the company owner, we planned a meticulous process to ensure the floor would not only look stunning but also withstand the rigors of being part of a restaurant car.
Sanding the Floor: The first major step was sanding the floor down to its bare wood. This process required precision and care, as we aimed to remove old finishes and imperfections without damaging the original wood. Using state-of-the-art sanding equipment, we gradually revealed the natural grain and texture of the historic wood, preparing it for the next stages.
Applying the Finish: Given the car’s intended use as a restaurant, the finish needed to be both durable and visually appealing. We applied three coats of a commercial grade high VOC finish, chosen for its superior durability and aesthetic quality. The high VOC content ensured a long-lasting finish that would protect the wood from wear and tear while enhancing its natural beauty.
Unique Finishing Technique: One distinctive aspect of this project was the decision to forgo buffing between coats. This choice, preferred by the company owner, was made to ensure the finish would last longer and avoid becoming slippery, which is crucial in a restaurant setting. This technique not only preserved the integrity of the finish but also added a unique touch to the final appearance of the floor.
The completed project was more than just a beautifully refinished floor; it was a tribute to history. The rich, lustrous wood now stands as a testament to the craftsmanship and care invested in preserving an important piece of American heritage. Each step taken in restoring the floor was done with the utmost respect for its historical significance, ensuring that visitors to the Abraham Lincoln Funeral Car will experience a piece of history that looks as vibrant as it did in the past.
Partnering with Historic Railroad Equipment Manufacturers U.S.A. on this project was a remarkable experience. Their dedication to reliving great moments in railroad history through meticulous restorations is truly inspiring. This project not only enhanced the beauty and functionality of the train car but also allowed us to contribute to preserving an important chapter in American history.
