Refinishing Stairs and Railings in Lily Lake Illinois

Project Steps:

1. Sanding posts railings and medalions:

   • We helped ourselves in flat areas and long parts of the railing with orbital sander – pump sander and 80 grit sanding paper. Then started by hand-sanding the railings with 80-grit sandpaper to remove the old finish to smooth it out with 220 grit. This careful sanding ensured a smooth surface for the new stain. 

2. Spindles Removal:

   • The spindles were removed from the stairs to allow for better sanding. This step ensured that every part of the spindles was thoroughly prepared for staining.

3. Water Popping technique:

   • To enhance the grain and allow the stain to penetrate more deeply, we performed water popping on both the railings and stairs. This technique involves wetting the wood, which raises the grain and opens up the pores of the wood.

4. Staining:

   • We applied Bona Bark Stain to the railings and stairs. This high-quality stain provided a rich, uniform color that complemented the existing decor.

5. Finishing – coats of water based finish:

   • After the stain application, a high-quality finish was applied to protect and enhance the durability of the railings and stairs. This finish not only improved the appearance but also added a layer of protection to the wood, ensuring longevity.
